Just before the money bubble burst and Ben Affleck was eliminated Phil Hellmuth invited him to take over his chips and play for a while. Affleck played well and helped get Hellmuth into the money before they switched back.

First to get eliminated was Casey Affleck who was awarded $16,038 for ninth place which he donated to the Ante Up for Africa charity.

Source: Birmingham Post

“I would like to say that I was selective but I think my method has just been to wait until there is something that I love - then when I am broke I have to take the best of what is available to me. It is easier to do when you are single (he is married to Summer Phoenix, sister of Joaquin and they have two sons, Indiana and Atticus) but my wife has been an actress longer than I have and she makes even more artistic choices.

Read the full article under the cut.

The Affleck brothers talk to Alison Jones about their latest movie and why they were happy to delay its release date in this country.

Gone Baby Gone isn’t the first film that Ben Affleck has written that his little brother Casey has appeared in.

He played one of working class genius Will’s buddies in Good Will Hunting, for which Ben and his co-writer Matt Damon so memorably won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay back in their 20s.

But this is the first Affleck film in which Casey is front and centre, starring as baby-faced private detective Patrick Kenzie who is called in to investigate a child kidnapping case with his partner Angie (Michelle Monaghan).

The quality of the script, which Ben adapted, along with another friend Aaron Stockard, from the thriller by Dennis Lehane, showed that he had lost none of the talent that was revealed in GWH.

What it did prove was his ability as a director to handle the sinuous and provocative screenplay in which the lines between right and wrong become increasingly blurred.

Due for release last year, it was held back in the UK because of similarities between the storyline of a blond four-year-old girl who had been snatched from her bed and the case of Madeleine McCann.

Ben, who has a two-year-old daughter, Violet, with wife Jennifer Garner, understood the decision to delay, saying: “Obviously we have a greater concern for that than we do for the release of our film. That is a commercial matter whereas this is a matter of life and death.

“We don’t want to release the movie if it is going to touch a nerve or provoke any sensitivity.”

The film is set in a blue collar area of south-Boston, terrain familiar to the Affleck brothers who grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

It is where Dorchester (Mass, named after the English county by Puritan immigrants) native Lehanne has set most of his books, including Mystic River, which was made into a multi-award winning movie by Clint Eastwood.

Inevitably there have been comparisons between the two films.

“Clint Eastwood is a giant towering icon of the cinema and it has Sean Penn in it who is, if not the best actor in the world, then in the top eve,” says Ben.

“You can’t be envious of Eastwood it’s like comparing yourself to Mount Kilimanjaro. You are just a man, that’s a mountain. So it wasn’t something I worried about, we just made our little movie.”

He was able to cast the man he considered to be “the best actor in his age group”, Casey, who, at 32, is three years younger than Ben.

“The character was written older and probably my best choice as a director was to imagine him younger. I think it was smarter because he had more to lose.

“Casey was from the area and he understood it better than anyone else. He is just by far the best actor in his age group and he had the added advantage of people not being as familiar with him as they would be with other actors, so he could surprise audiences.”

Moviegoers might have previously dismissed Casey as riding on the coat-tails of his older brother’s fame as he seemed to be stuck in supporting roles, overshadowed by the big draws in projects like the Ocean’s 11 trilogy. But he proved to be a revelation as the titular killer in last year’s The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, deftly stealing the film from under the nose of Brad Pitt.

Casey admits that his and Ben’s relationship meant they already understood each other when they came to work together, but that didn’t necessarily mean it was always harmonious.

“We disagreed over anything, from the smalllest little thing to the bigger questions of what the movie means and what are we saying about the choices this character makes.

“I would have these discussions with any writer of a movie because it is just my nature. I know that I am opinionated. But when it comes to making movies what is the point in being polite? You better just take the gloves off..

“The difference is Ben and I already had a kind of shared language, we could get right to it.

“He might have just thought I was a pain in the ass. I know our discussions changed a certain amount of the script so it wasn’t totally for nothing.”

Though Casey has, like Ben, been acting since he was a boy and has also co-written a screenplay with Matt Damon (Gerry, which was made by Gus van Sant), he never exploded out the gates careerwise like they did.

He has also, with the exception of Ocean’s, tended to avoid more commercial ventures.

“But our family is the most important thing to us and I’m not going to move to a rooming house and give my kids meal tickets because I don’t want to do such-and-such a movie.”

He is aware, having seen the kind of media circus that trailed Ben around during his high-profile dating days when he romanced Gwyneth Paltrow and then Jennifer Lopez, of the downside of success and increased celebrity.

“The lustre has dulled on what all that means. Being famous does create opportunities to work with great people but I can also see what a nuisance it can be.

“I can walk down a street and nobody really gives a s*** about me but I went to Venice and had just got off the boat and some idiot was at my shoulder, just hounding me, asking for my autograph. I had my son in my arms, this guy was speaking Italian, so I couldn’t understand him, I was saying ‘one minute, one minute’ but he kept pushing it in my face. I nearly put my son down and threw him in the water.

“I finally understood how it could be more than a nusiance, that it could be an emotional challenge.

“Someone like Brad Pitt has it a thousandfold and he handles it with so much class.”

Ben and Casey got into acting through their mother Chris Ann’s college roommate, who was a casting director and who got Casey a part as an extra in a Liam Neeson movie.

“I was eight years old and we got $20, that is a lot of baseball cards and we got to miss school for a day and I said sign me up anytime.”

Ben was part of the crowd at the baseball game Kevin Costner attends in Field of Dreams.

By the time Casey got to high school he was still only five foot and too short to play baseball with the other kids so he made his way to the theatre department.

“The first show I did was the summer musical and there was me and 19 girls, I said ‘I kind of like this’.

“It was so different to what I had been doing, which was playing baseball and getting in fights and throwing rocks.

“Acting wasn’t an abnormal thing for us to do. My father was bartender but when he was a young man he had begun the the Theatre Company of Boston. It was small group of people including Robert Duvall and Dustin Hoffman.

My father was stage manager.

“That said my dad wasn’t around all that much and didn’t have a whole lot of say in what I did. My mother hated the idea of me dropping out of college to go be an actor and it wasn’t until I started working a little bit that she stopped nagging me to go back.”

Though Casey says that he and Ben didn’t really start getting along until they were in their 20s, they remained close through their acting, working with the same directors and, in Matt Damon’s case, co-writers.

“I wasn’t around when they wrote Good Will Hunting, I was making To Die For with Gus Van Sant. When Gus got the script he called me and said ‘Who is Ben Affleck, is that your brother? I got some script that is written by him and a friend of his named Matt’. I said ‘they’ve been working on it for a while, do you like it?’ He said ‘yeah, I am really rooting for the character and I don’t know why and I think that’s a good sign’.

“I wasn’t responsible for them (getting together) though. I said ‘Gus don’t work with these a**holes…’.”

You’ve heard the buzz and read the news, and we know you’ll see the films. He’s received critical acclaim for not one but two theatrical releases this fall, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Gone Baby Gone—’tis the season of Casey Affleck.

But did you know that just a short while ago, you were prevented from seeing him in another starring role? Casey took aim at the meat industry in a PETA public service announcement (PSA) by exposing its shameful abuse of animals, but the television networks refused to air it. Now, PETA and Casey have been forced to create a toned-down version of the PSA just to get the networks to agree to show it on air.

Watch more videos at PETA.org

In both versions of the PSA, Casey shares his reasons for going vegan: “When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, ‘Because they are unhealthy and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry.’” Casey doesn’t mince words about how animals suffer in factory farms and slaughterhouses: “Chickens, cows, and pigs in factory farms spend their whole lives in filthy, cramped conditions, only to die a prolonged and painful death.”Casey urges his fans to avoid meat—which he aptly calls “poison”—not only because it is the product of horrendous cruelty but also because it is a health nightmare, “proven to contribute to heart disease and cancer.”

Casey wanted to show his fans exactly what happens behind the scenes of the meat industry—images that most people never see. However, when the networks wouldn’t air the whole truth, Casey and PETA agreed to make a version of the same PSA with softer, toned-down images that the networks would agree to air.

What You Can Do
Casey made the video with the original images because he wanted others to get a glimpse of what really goes on behind the scenes in factory farms. He says, “All the videos that the wonderful people at PETA make that I see online and on TV resonate with me each and every time I watch them.” Help PETA and Casey by pasting this code

<embed src=”http://www.goveg.com/swf/casey_affleck.swf” quality=”high” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”400″ height=”200″ allowScriptAccess=”always”></embed><br /> <br><a href=”http://www.peta.org?=petastreamvids”>Watch more videos at PETA.org</a><br>“Order a FREE vegetarian starter kit at <a href=”http://www.goveg.com/order.asp?c=gvcabv” target=”_blank”>GoVeg.com</a>.”

on your Web site, your MySpace or You Tube profile, or your blog so you can show the video on your page. Also, be sure to e-mail the video to all your friends and family members today!

It’s easy to improve your health and help animals like Casey does. Order a free Vegetarian Starter Kit today!

In 4REAL Pawnee, Sol Guy takes Casey Affleck to the Pawnee Nation reservation in Oklahoma to meet Native leader Crystal Echo Hawk and her NVision crew. NVision is a collective of Native men and women who use hip hop, popular culture, film and visual and performing arts to create a dialogue with Native youth about ways to realize their vision for success, leadership and well being.

Crystal, a member of the Kitkehaki Band of the Pawnee Nation, works hard to give Native youth hope and opportunity. The Pawnee Nation alone has a 40% unemployment rate and roughly 40% of the population lives below the poverty line.

“You have to show the kids that just because they grew up on a reservation or grew up poor doesn’t mean they cannot pursue their own passions,” Crystal says. “We have to make this investment in our youth now or we will lose who we are.”

Sol and Casey check out the launch of the NVision tour before it travels to Native reservations and cities with urban Native populations. The tour includes workshops, concerts and promoting the message of the importance of leadership, empowerment and cultural pride.

Sol and Casey also witness the challenges of reservation life that are often invisible to mainstream society. They are inspired not only by NVision’s passionate effort to combat despair but by the overall pride and resilience of the Pawnee community.

”The moment I was most moved was when they did that ceremony to welcome me and Sol,” Casey says. “I was just floored. It wasn’t like anything I had expected or had ever experienced before.”

Film will reunite Affleck with “Gone Baby Gone” producer Sean Bailey, who is producing through his new Disney-based Idealogyshingle.

Story, set in the 1930s Los Angeles, centers on an amnesiac (Affleck) who finds himself working for a mobster — a sadistic killer given the nickname “the Kind One” — and falling in love with the thug’s girlfriend.

Epperson will adapt his novel when the WGA strike is over.

Last year saw Affleck star in “Gone Baby Gone,” and he had a supporting turn in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” receiving an Oscar nomination for the latter.

Epperson frequent collaborates with his boyhood friend Billy Bob Thornton. They co-wrote the screenplays for “One False Move,” “A Family Thing” and “The Gift.” “The Kind One,” which marks his literary debut, was published Jan. 22 by Five Star.

Casey Affleck is on a hot streak – scoring a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and starring in the critically acclaimed Gone Baby Gone.

But his most rewarding role to date? Playing dad to his two young sons.

“[Being a parent] sort of changed everything,” the 32-year-old actor (little brother to Ben Affleck), told reporters at Monday’s 80th annual Academy Awards Nominees luncheon. “It’s far and away the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Affleck’s wife, Summer Phoenix, gave birth to son Indiana, 3, in 2004, and to another son, whose name has yet to be announced, in January.

“It’s been transformative,” he said. When Phoenix was first pregnant, he added, “I remember… getting a lot of advice from people that I really trusted and… after I had the kid, thinking why didn’t anyone tell me this is the way it was going to be?”

Explaining parenthood is “a little bit like trying to describe to somebody… what life is like on another planet, in another galaxy,” Affleck said. “Until you’re sort of there in that other galaxy, then you’ll never really know what it’s like.”

After his recent professional success, Affleck said he’s been enjoying some quiet time at home with his little ones.

“I love being around the house and being with the kids everyday,” he said. “Being an actor means that, if you’re successful anyway, you can kind of work for three or four months out of the year and then you’re home a lot of the time.”

———————————

People says the baby was born in January but we have conflicting reports.
