“At that time in the morning, my kids have to be jumping on my face to wake me up ,” said a cool and collected Casey Affleck, about receiving his nomination for best supporting actor for “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.” “In truth - it’s a great honor to be included in a group with people like Tom and Javier and Hal but I’m taking it all with a grain of salt because there are some really good performances this year and I think there’s a bit of luck involved.” As for the ongoing writers strike and its dampening effect on this year’s award season, Affleck said he has no room for disappointment of any kind. “When I read the script for this role I thought ‘Well if I can get this part and work with people like Brad Pitt and others that were in the film I won’t ask for anything else,” said Affleck. “People responding really well to it was just icing on the cake.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Galloway gathered six awards front-runners — Tom Wilkinson (Warner Bros.’ “Michael Clayton”), George Clooney (Warner Bros.’ “Michael Clayton”), Javier Bardem (Miramax’s “No Country for Old Men”), Casey Affleck (Warner Bros.’ “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”); John Travolta (New Line’s “Hairspray”) and Ryan Gosling (MGM’s “Lars and the Real Girl”) — for a freewheeling discussion of their work.

George Clooney and Casey Affleck took top male honors from the National Board of Review, which prides itself on being the oldest movie organization in the country (it’s 98 years old) and the first to announce its prizes each year.
The Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men was picked as this year’s best picture, and Tim Burton is best director, for the musical Sweeney Todd, his sixth movie to star Johnny Depp. Ratatouille won the animated film award.
Clooney was cited as best actor for Michael Clayton and Affleck for his supporting role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
