You’ve heard the buzz and read the news, and we know you’ll see the films. He’s received critical acclaim for not one but two theatrical releases this fall, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Gone Baby Gone—’tis the season of Casey Affleck.

But did you know that just a short while ago, you were prevented from seeing him in another starring role? Casey took aim at the meat industry in a PETA public service announcement (PSA) by exposing its shameful abuse of animals, but the television networks refused to air it. Now, PETA and Casey have been forced to create a toned-down version of the PSA just to get the networks to agree to show it on air.

In both versions of the PSA, Casey shares his reasons for going vegan: “When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, ‘Because they are unhealthy and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry.’” Casey doesn’t mince words about how animals suffer in factory farms and slaughterhouses: “Chickens, cows, and pigs in factory farms spend their whole lives in filthy, cramped conditions, only to die a prolonged and painful death.”Casey urges his fans to avoid meat—which he aptly calls “poison”—not only because it is the product of horrendous cruelty but also because it is a health nightmare, “proven to contribute to heart disease and cancer.”

Casey wanted to show his fans exactly what happens behind the scenes of the meat industry—images that most people never see. However, when the networks wouldn’t air the whole truth, Casey and PETA agreed to make a version of the same PSA with softer, toned-down images that the networks would agree to air.

What You Can Do
Casey made the video with the original images because he wanted others to get a glimpse of what really goes on behind the scenes in factory farms. He says, “All the videos that the wonderful people at PETA make that I see online and on TV resonate with me each and every time I watch them.” Help PETA and Casey by pasting this code

In 4REAL Pawnee, Sol Guy takes Casey Affleck to the Pawnee Nation reservation in Oklahoma to meet Native leader Crystal Echo Hawk and her NVision crew. NVision is a collective of Native men and women who use hip hop, popular culture, film and visual and performing arts to create a dialogue with Native youth about ways to realize their vision for success, leadership and well being.

Crystal, a member of the Kitkehaki Band of the Pawnee Nation, works hard to give Native youth hope and opportunity. The Pawnee Nation alone has a 40% unemployment rate and roughly 40% of the population lives below the poverty line.

“You have to show the kids that just because they grew up on a reservation or grew up poor doesn’t mean they cannot pursue their own passions,” Crystal says. “We have to make this investment in our youth now or we will lose who we are.”

Sol and Casey check out the launch of the NVision tour before it travels to Native reservations and cities with urban Native populations. The tour includes workshops, concerts and promoting the message of the importance of leadership, empowerment and cultural pride.

Sol and Casey also witness the challenges of reservation life that are often invisible to mainstream society. They are inspired not only by NVision’s passionate effort to combat despair but by the overall pride and resilience of the Pawnee community.

”The moment I was most moved was when they did that ceremony to welcome me and Sol,” Casey says. “I was just floored. It wasn’t like anything I had expected or had ever experienced before.”

Casey Affleck is attached to star in period noir drama “The Kind One,” based on the just-published novel by Tom Epperson.

Film will reunite Affleck with “Gone Baby Gone” producer Sean Bailey, who is producing through his new Disney-based Idealogyshingle.

Story, set in the 1930s Los Angeles, centers on an amnesiac (Affleck) who finds himself working for a mobster — a sadistic killer given the nickname “the Kind One” — and falling in love with the thug’s girlfriend.

Epperson will adapt his novel when the WGA strike is over.

Last year saw Affleck star in “Gone Baby Gone,” and he had a supporting turn in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” receiving an Oscar nomination for the latter.

Epperson frequent collaborates with his boyhood friend Billy Bob Thornton. They co-wrote the screenplays for “One False Move,” “A Family Thing” and “The Gift.” “The Kind One,” which marks his literary debut, was published Jan. 22 by Five Star.

Casey Affleck is on a hot streak – scoring a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and starring in the critically acclaimed Gone Baby Gone.

But his most rewarding role to date? Playing dad to his two young sons.

“[Being a parent] sort of changed everything,” the 32-year-old actor (little brother to Ben Affleck), told reporters at Monday’s 80th annual Academy Awards Nominees luncheon. “It’s far and away the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Affleck’s wife, Summer Phoenix, gave birth to son Indiana, 3, in 2004, and to another son, whose name has yet to be announced, in January.

“It’s been transformative,” he said. When Phoenix was first pregnant, he added, “I remember… getting a lot of advice from people that I really trusted and… after I had the kid, thinking why didn’t anyone tell me this is the way it was going to be?”

Explaining parenthood is “a little bit like trying to describe to somebody… what life is like on another planet, in another galaxy,” Affleck said. “Until you’re sort of there in that other galaxy, then you’ll never really know what it’s like.”

After his recent professional success, Affleck said he’s been enjoying some quiet time at home with his little ones.

“I love being around the house and being with the kids everyday,” he said. “Being an actor means that, if you’re successful anyway, you can kind of work for three or four months out of the year and then you’re home a lot of the time.”

People says the baby was born in January but we have conflicting reports.
