Casey Affleck directing documentary on Joaquin Phoenix
Casey Affleck will get behind a camera lens to track the musical career of fellow actor Joaquin Phoenix, who portrayed Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line.”
Affleck is directing a documentary feature on his friend and brother-in-law Phoenix, who in the fall announced his retirement from the thespian business in order to focus on a music career.
Phoenix is embarking on a new path as a rapper, with an album to be produced by Sean Combs. He is scheduled to make his first public performance Friday at a Las Vegas club, which will officially kick off Affleck’s shoot.
Affleck is known for his work in front of the camera with movies like “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” series. He directed a series of shorts for Sundance Channel in the late 1990s. He is married to Summer Phoenix, sister of his new film subject.
Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba are teaming with director Michael Winterbottom for “The Killer Inside Me,” an adaptation of a novel from noir author Jim Thompson.
The story follows a West Texas sheriff (Affleck) and his downward spiral from a boring small-town cop into a ruthless, sociopathic murderer. Alba plays a prostitute.
The novel was made into a 1976 film starring Stacy Keach.
MuseFilm’s Chris Hanley, Cyclone Prods.’ Robert Weinbach, Revolution Films’ Andrew Eaton and Bradford Schlei are producing the latest adaptation, which was written by Weinbach and John Curran.
Oklahoma-based Idion Entertainment Group is financing, as is Barbarian Films and OceaniaMedia Finance. A mid-January start date is being eyed.
Affleck, repped by Endeavor and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, most recently starred in “Gone Baby Gone,” while Alba, repped by Thruline Entertainment, most recently appeared in “The Love Guru.”
Endeavor-repped Winterbottom’s most recent film was “A Mighty Heart,” starring Angelina Jolie.
